Folks tell me that I am "food motivated", which I suppose is a cute dog-training inspired way of saying that I'm simply a glutton. :) I love food! I can't deny it.
K stayed home on Tuesday, due to an unplanned 19 hour stint at work the previous day. So we took the opportunity to pop out and buy a car seat for the spawnling, and decided on the spur of the moment to wander into the city for some dim sum.
I think the last time we've had dim sum together would have been maybe 2 years ago, so it was long overdue!
We ended up at Golden Century in Northbridge. (I still felt a little put off from the whole yum cha thing in Perth from late last year when I took my parents out to a place on William Street, queued up for 45 minutes only to be served 'food' soaking in oil and tasting somewhat like soaked cardboard.) So anyhow, the decor of Golden Century was odd as it consisted of suede-look purple paint with Ikea orchid prints around the place. However, I dine out to
EAT, not to worry a lot about the decor. I'll forgive gutter-side road stalls for their splintery rickety tables as long as their food tastes great (and doesn't end up killing me).
Service was fast and friendly, and the waitresses didn't automatically assume I spoke Cantonese, which was a big relief for me. We grabbed the standard fare from the trolley, char siu pao, sticky rice in lotus leaves, siu mai, har gao, radish 'cakes', a bunch of other savouries and of course finished up on custard egg tarts. The mince in the siu mai was a little coarse though. K grabbed the braised pork ribs, which was amusing as they are very slippery and not chopstick friendly at all. Very filling stuff! I'm glad to say that the food wasn't dripping in oils. It certainly wasn't as tasty or varied as the dim sum house offerings in Hong Kong, but I guess in Perth you take what you can get. I'd definitely come back for more dim sum here, but there are a few other places I want to try out first as I've heard good things about them as well.
So feeling completely stuffed full, we headed home and relaxed for a few hours before we realised it was K's mother's birthday! After a few moments of panic we organised dinner at Sorrento Quays. Oh dear, yet more eating. We wandered around the harbour for while aimlessly, - his mother is a tad indecisive. Eventually we ended up in Portofino's. Again the wait staff were attentive. The menu seemed pretty standard in terms of variety and price for the 'average' Italian restaurant. K ordered the rack of lamb, I grabbed a wood-fired pizza. The lamb looked great, but was too rare for me to sample due to my current state. Gosh, I really really miss a bloody charred chunk of cow or lamb. My pizza was light with proscuitto, fetta, grilled eggplants, capsicum and basil, but due to my heavy lunch I didn't care very much. All round in terms of taste, the food was average-good. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to drive up here for Italian food since we have Villa da Vinci's literally down the street from our house.
Now, days later I'm still thinking of custard egg tarts.
